The HELP Center’s Internship Program is designed to equip the next generation of social work and psychology professionals with the hands-on experience and professional development they need to thrive in the field of human services. Open to undergraduate students enrolled in accredited Social Work or Psychology programs, this unpaid internship offers meaningful engagement in a supportive, service-focused nonprofit environment.

Interns become integral members of our Case Management and Program Services teams, working alongside experienced staff to support individuals and families facing economic hardship, food insecurity, unemployment, and crisis. Through this immersive experience, interns build key competencies in case coordination, psychosocial assessment, client engagement, documentation, and community resource navigation.

With established roots in Nashville, Tennessee, and a newly launched office in Charlotte, North Carolina, The HELP Center is expanding its impact—and its educational partnerships. We have successfully hosted interns from Tennessee State University, Belmont University, Western Kentucky University, and more, and we are now seeking to partner with institutions across North Carolina to broaden student access to real-world learning opportunities.

APPLY

Case Management Support

Interns will assist in the initial intake process by gathering essential client information, identifying immediate needs, and supporting the development of individualized service plans. Through direct exposure to real cases, interns learn how to build trust, practice active listening, and coordinate services effectively.

Why it matters: Mastering the foundational skills of case management equips students to navigate complex service delivery systems after graduation. These experiences foster the ability to think critically, organize services, and advocate on behalf of clients—key competencies for entry-level roles in both social work and psychology fields.

Client Assessment

Students will observe and participate in the assessment process, learning how to identify behavioral, emotional, environmental, and social factors affecting each client’s well-being. Interns will also assist in tracking client progress and updating goals over time.

Why it matters: The ability to assess client needs holistically is essential for effective intervention. Gaining confidence in psychosocial evaluation and progress monitoring prepares interns to apply these methods in a variety of practice settings and gives them an edge in graduate-level coursework or entry into clinical roles.

Program Delivery

Interns will play a supportive role in the facilitation of educational workshops, resource fairs, and community engagement activities. These programs may include job readiness training, life skills education, or behavioral health support.

These practical achievements reflect an intern’s ability to operate in real-time environments and contribute meaningfully to client empowerment and community building.

Documentation

Interns will gain exposure to case documentation and data management through hands-on use of The HELP Center’s custom client relationship management platform, MyHELP CRM. Responsibilities may include recording case notes, updating service records, and preparing summary reports.

Why it matters: Accurate documentation is critical for continuity of care, legal compliance, and program evaluation. Familiarity with electronic case management systems and data protocols provides a competitive advantage in both public and private sector human service organizations.

Client Engagement

Interns will engage with individuals and families from varied backgrounds, including those experiencing poverty, unemployment, food insecurity, or crisis. Exposure to culturally diverse populations helps students build empathy, cultural competence, and relational skills.
